Learning Scheme

A. Distance Education

Oceania Polytechnic and Technological University offers a flexible approach to education that includes Online and Modular Learning Modality, Distance Education, as well as Asynchronous Learning (Self-Directed or Self-Paced).

Online and Modular Learning Modality

  • Online Learning - This modality allows students to access their educational content, lectures, assignments, and resources through the internet. It provides the flexibility to learn from anywhere with an internet connection.
  • Modular Learning - In this approach, the curriculum is divided into modules or units, each focusing on specific topics or learning objectives. Students can progress through these modules at their own pace, providing a structured yet flexible learning experience.
  • Interactivity - Online and modular learning often incorporates various interactive elements, such as discussion forums, virtual classrooms, and multimedia resources, to engage students and facilitate collaborative learning.
  • Self-Paced - Students have the freedom to choose when and where they study, making it ideal for those with busy schedules or other commitments.

Asynchronous Learning (Self-Directed or Self-Paced)

  • Self-Directed Learning - This approach places a significant emphasis on individual responsibility and autonomy. Students have the flexibility to set their own learning goals, pace, and study schedules.
  • Resource Accessibility: Course materials, lectures, readings, and assignments are made available to students asynchronously, allowing them to access and study the content at their convenience.
  • Personalized Learning: Self-paced learning allows students to tailor their education to their learning style and needs. They can spend more time on challenging topics and move quickly through material they grasp easily.
  • Continuous Support: Although learning is self-directed, students typically have access to support resources, such as instructors, tutors, and online forums, to seek help and clarify doubts when needed.
  • Assessment Flexibility: Evaluation may include quizzes, assignments, and exams that can be completed within defined timeframes but still offer flexibility within those timeframes.

Oceania Polytechnic and Technological University's offering of Online and Modular Learning Modality and Asynchronous Learning caters to diverse learning styles and needs, providing students with the freedom to pursue their education in a manner that aligns with their individual circumstances and preferences. This approach can be especially beneficial for those who require flexibility and self-directed control over their learning journey.

B. Learning Management System (LMS)

Google Classroom serves as the designated Learning Management System (LMS) for many educational institutions. Its user-friendly interface and various features streamline the learning process for both educators and students. It provides tools for assigning and submitting tasks, facilitating discussions, and sharing resources efficiently.

Navigating Google Classroom

Navigating Google Classroom involves accessing different sections such as the Stream, where announcements and updates are posted, the Classwork tab for assignments and materials, and the People section for class member management.

Significance in Distance Education

The platform's significance in Distance Education lies in its ability to create a cohesive virtual classroom, allowing for easy access to educational materials, seamless communication, and real-time feedback. It bridges the physical gap between educators and students, fostering a structured learning environment regardless of geographical distances. Its organized structure and integrated tools significantly enhance the teaching and learning experience in remote settings, enabling a more effective and engaging educational process.

C. Nature of Study

At the university level, students can pursue different educational paths depending on their preferences, background, and career goals. These include Degree by Coursework, Degree by Research, and Degree by Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).

Degree by Coursework

In the coursework path, students are required to complete a set curriculum, which includes various lessons and assignments. However, in addition to these requirements, they must also submit a substantial research paper such as a Thesis, Case Study, Special Problem, Field Practice, Narrative Report, or other forms of research studies.

Degree by Research

Conversely, the research-based path primarily involves the submission of a thesis or dissertation utilizing a provided template on the Learning Management System. Additionally, students in this track are expected to create a 10-minute oral presentation video discussing their thesis topic and arguments, serving as an oral defense in front of an examination committee. Unlike the coursework path, there is no synchronous live defense session required.

The comparison between these two paths underscores that while coursework entails a structured curriculum with additional research components, research-based study predominantly focuses on the thesis and a comprehensive oral presentation without a live defense session.

Degree by Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL)

The APEL path offers a flexible, alternative route to earning a degree for students who possess significant prior professional experience or have gained valuable knowledge outside of traditional academic settings. This system allows students to gain formal recognition for their experiential learning, including work experience, volunteer activities, and other non-formal education.

Under APEL, students can submit a portfolio or evidence demonstrating their competencies and skills acquired through practical experience. This portfolio is evaluated by a panel, which determines if the student's prior learning meets the requirements of the degree program. If the learning is deemed sufficient, students can receive academic credits or exemptions from certain courses, reducing the time and cost needed to complete their degree.

The APEL system ensures that students with substantial real-world experience or previous non-traditional learning can progress in their education without needing to repeat knowledge they have already mastered. This pathway supports the idea of lifelong learning, empowering students to build on their prior experiences as they pursue their academic and professional goals.

D. Submission

Oceania Polytechnic and Technological University offers an Online Submission system as part of its educational services.

  • Convenient Assignment Submission - Oceania Polytechnic and Technological University provides a user-friendly online platform where students can submit their assignments and coursework electronically. This eliminates the need for physical paper submissions and simplifies the submission process.

  • Digital Uploads - Students can upload various types of digital files, including essays, reports, presentations, and other required documents. This digital submission process allows for efficient and secure transmission of assignments.

  • Date and Time Stamps - The system typically records the date and time of submission, ensuring that assignments are submitted by the specified deadlines. This helps both students and instructors track and verify timely submissions.

  • Accessibility and Convenience - The online submission system is accessible 24/7, allowing students to submit their work at their convenience, provided they adhere to the submission deadlines set by the course or instructor.

  • Reduced Paperwork - Going paperless with online submission contributes to environmental sustainability by reducing the use of paper and printing resources. It also simplifies administrative tasks related to managing physical submissions.

  • Efficient Feedback - Instructors can provide feedback and grades digitally through the same platform, streamlining the grading and feedback process. Students can access their feedback online, facilitating quicker learning and improvement.

E. Assessment

Oceania Polytechnic and Technological University offers a comprehensive assessment system for both undergraduate and graduate programs, using a combination of final examinations and various outputs as key indicators of students' performance.

Undergraduate Programs

  • Final Examinations - Undergraduate programs typically culminate in final examinations that assess students' understanding of the course materials and their ability to apply the knowledge acquired throughout the semester or academic year. These exams are typically comprehensive and cover the entire course content.
  • Outputs - In addition to final exams, Oceania Polytechnic and Technological University evaluates undergraduate students based on a variety of outputs. These may include assignments, research projects, presentations, practical assessments, and coursework. These outputs serve as indicators of a student's ability to apply what they've learned in a practical context and demonstrate their skills and knowledge.

Graduate Programs

  • Final Examinations - Graduate programs often include final examinations that are more advanced and specialized, reflecting the higher level of expertise expected from graduate students. These exams assess a deeper understanding of the subject matter and may include comprehensive written exams, oral defenses, or practical assessments.
  • Outputs - Similar to undergraduate programs, graduate students are also evaluated based on a range of outputs. These may include thesis or dissertation projects, research publications, case studies, and other research-driven assessments. These outputs showcase the graduate students' ability to contribute to the academic and professional discourse in their field and demonstrate their research and analytical capabilities.

In both undergraduate and graduate programs, the assessment process at Oceania Polytechnic and Technological University aims to provide a well-rounded evaluation of students' knowledge and skills. It encompasses traditional final examinations as well as various outputs that emphasize practical application, critical thinking, and research abilities, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared for their future careers and academic pursuits.

F. Grading System

Oceania Polytechnic and Technological University employs a percentage-based Grade Point Average (GPA) grading system to evaluate students' academic performance. The GPA serves as a numerical representation of a student's average grades throughout their academic tenure at the institution. Typically, the GPA is weighted based on the number of credits assigned to each enrolled course.

In alignment with standard practice, the university utilizes a four-point scale, where the highest attainable GPA is 1.0, signifying the achievement of an 'A' grade in every course. For clarity, here is the GPA chart employed by Oceania Polytechnic and Technological University:

G. Graduation

Oceania Polytechnic and Technological University does not conduct traditional graduation ceremonies. In line with its Digital Documentation Policy, the university carries out the conferment and issuance of academic awards on a monthly, rolling basis. Students may apply for conferment at any time, and once confirmed eligible, their degrees are officially conferred. Digital copies of certificates, transcripts, and other official documents are then issued promptly, allowing for the timely recognition of academic achievements without the need for scheduled ceremonies.
